bbcsrToday a selection of Year 8 students have been making and reporting the news for BBC School News Day. We have reported a number of stories from around the world and from inside school. We have worked like true journalists throughout the day; it's felt like the real thing to meet deadlines and rush around the school to try and get the latest news story. Our live news broadcast is fantastic and the blog reporting our day gives everyone a view of what an excellent day we have had.

Mrs Robbins is incredibly proud of the journalists who have created a news website that links to the international BBC site. She would like to thank all of the students who worked so hard to make this day successful and special and something to remember for a long time to come.

Special thanks also go to Miss Allen, Mr Quinn and Miss Garbutt who also helped to make an extremely successful day.

You can see some photos in our Gallery.

Our news report video can be found below.

wigannewcastle01In the recent game between Wigan and Newcastle, which ended in a controversial 2-1 victory for Wigan, Massadio Haidara, was severely injured by Wigan player Callum McManaman's late high tackle. The Referee who saw the tackle, failed to act leaving the F.A in a position where they cannot punish McManaman after the game. Haidara who was injured has said that the F.A's decision to not punish McManaman was "ridiculous" and has urged them to do more to protect players. Haidara suffered knee ligament damage, leaving him unable to play for the rest of the season. He said "I don't understand why? He could have ended my career and ruined my whole life and he will play again before me! It's Ridiculous! You must protect players." After the game he also said that he felt like his leg had "Snapped in two."

Tasty Treats? Print

Israel has had a new invasion of locusts. Many farmers are getting annoyed with the swarm of locusts devouring their crops in minutes!

The farmers and members of the public in Israel have decided to make the best of the locusts by eating them and selling them as creative food! Things such as chocolate covered locusts and breaded locusts are being made. Don't worry, first the locusts are cleaned and sterilised, before being changed into 'delicious' treats! They are recommended to be eaten crunchy, and surprisingly, many say that they taste great!

I know I would not be too keen to eat locusts, would you?

At Cardinal Newman we have many exciting trips. For example we have many trips abroad such as going to Madrid, Barcelona, France... We also have trips associated with Maths, such as going to Alton Towers. We also have a chance to go to cinemas (Year 8 went to watch the nativity) and we have a chance to go to Dol-Y-Moch and experience a religious adventure. This week was the first week back to school for Malala Yousafzai after a traumatic experience. She has finally got what she wanted: an education. Her story has inspired young people to stand up for what they think is right.

Malala is from Pakistan and is fourteen years old. In our country, many people moan about having to get up and ready for school. However, in Pakistan this is not the case; girls in Pakistan do not even have the opportunity to go to school. Pakistani women are not treated with respect, have no privacy and are subjected like slaves. There is severe inequality between men and women in Pakistan; it seems that they are stuck in time, unable to move forward to the equality our country has.

On the 16th March 2013 England went into a crucial game against Wales to decide the winner of the Six Nations. Going into this game England had their sights set on the Grand Slam and Wales were breathing down their necks.

In the first half Wales had scored 9 points to England's 3. All Wales had to do was win by 7 points and the Six Nations would be theirs. Wales shocked England by winning by 27 points. Cuthbert for Wales scored two tries and Halfpenny with 4 Penalties. Biggar had scored a penalty and a conversion, at this stage Wales were cruising. Farrell had just scored a consolation penalty but it wasn't enough for England to get back into the game. Due to this result Wales finished top of the table with England finishing in second. Although both teams finished with the same amount of points there was a pretty big score difference.

The Eggy Experiment Print

Science Technology Engineering Maths (STEM)

stemToday at Cardinal Newman School we have had a visit from STEM trainer Dylan. We have spoken to him about his work travelling across Europe to work with a variety of people, but today he was in Coventry to work with our Year 9's in the technology block. Our team went to investigate.

We found the class working in teams to create automobiles. While we were there Mr. Algar and Dylan were helping the students build their cars. The experiment involved pushing the automobiles containing an egg down a ramp. The people we interviewed, Beth and Paige, said that they had been practising with plastic eggs. The point of the experiment is for the eggs not to smash while travelling down the ramp.

The overall lesson was a great success and all the people we spoke to said that they had thoroughly enjoyed the lesson. We wish them every success in their experiment!
